Home Checklist before Leaving for Vacation

Use an alarm system so you aren't victims of a break-in and burglary

Going on vacation is exciting, at Schumacher Homes we believe it’s important to make sure your home is secure and prepared before you leave so you aren’t victims of a break-in and burglary. Here’s a home checklist to help you get ready before you head out:

Lock all Doors and Windows

This may seem like an obvious one, however if you wish to avoid horror stories it’s important to double-check that all doors and windows are locked before you leave. Don’t forget to check the garage door and any pet doors as well.

Set up Timers

Set up timers for your lights, TV, and/or radio to give the impression that someone is still home. This can deter potential burglars.

Adjust your Thermostat

Depending on the time of year, adjust your thermostat to save energy while you’re away. You can also turn off the water heater and unplug electronics to save even more energy.

Stop Mail and Newspaper Delivery

A pile of mail and newspapers is a clear sign that nobody is home. Either put a hold on your deliveries or ask a neighbor to collect them for you.

Ask Someone to Check on your Home

Ask a neighbor or friend to keep an eye on your home while you’re away. They can check for any unusual activity and make sure everything looks secure.

Put Away Valuables

Put away any valuable items, like jewelry or electronics, in a safe or locked cabinet. This can help prevent being a victim of theft.

Clean Out the Fridge

Get rid of any perishable food items that may spoil while you’re away. You don’t want to come home to a smelly fridge!

Make Sure your Smoke Detectors and Alarms are Working

Check that your smoke detectors and alarms are working properly before you leave. This can give you peace of mind while you’re away.

Secure Outdoor Items

Secure any outdoor items, like lawn furniture or tools, to prevent them from being stolen or damaged in severe weather.

Avoid complaints from your friends/neighbors and being victims of unfriendlies, ensure your lawn/yard is cared for and your snow is shoveled.

By following this home checklist, you can ensure that your home is secure and prepared before you leave for vacation. Enjoy your trip with peace of mind knowing that your home is safe while you’re away. You don’t want to have a dream vacation and come home to a nightmare horror story.

Schumacher Homes can help you choose secure windows and doors. They can also recommend alarm systems to secure your home.
